Default Dang it! Rode an Ultra

Dealer had an open house / demo ride today, it was beautiful out if a bit chilly in the lower 40's. I have been considering trading the SG for an Ultra Limited but given the price of the UL thought I had talked myself out of it but figured I'd go demo an Ultra just to see the difference. Wow!!! I cannot believe the difference between the UC and my SG, I figured they would be nearly the same but was I surprised. Now I know why you guys love your Ultras, I couldnt believe how smooth it rode and how it soaked up bumps. Now I love my SG but it rides like a tank in comparison, of course the seat differences dont hurt either. So now back to justifying the investment in an FLHTK!

There are 2 things that were not better then the SG though 1) I really felt like I was sitting high or sitting "on" the bike instead of in it like the SG. Sitting on the bike I didnt feel the 1" height difference for some reason (not a problem) and 2) I had a harder time backing up because of the location of the passenger floor boards.

The backing up you will get used to. The seat can be redone later.

Might as well make a deal. It's gonna nag at you now!!

I keep the passenger boards up when backing...then my wife gets on. The seat can be adjusted. I can't imagine having a different bike!

If it is just the ride you like better than swap to the taller shocks and change the seat and you will be there. Add a tour pak, lowers and other stuff over time. You could prolly do all of this for less than the loss you would take on trade. Personally I like the look of an Ultraized Street Glide. All of the goodies with the monochromatic look.

Had an 06 Road King Classic and rode an 06 Ultra and had to have it...Next it will become a FLTRU....the real reason for the Ultra

Since the frames are identical, I would think the difference in ride would be the 1" longer rear shocks. I have an Ultra and due to my height, I changed out the OEM rear shocks to the Profile Low's. No doubt in my mind I lost some of the 'smooth' ride I had and is sure seems like the rear shocks bottom out easily, even though I'm running 25-30 lbs. of air pressure. I don't remember the the OEM's bottoming out once.

You could even change out the seat on your SG, along with the shocks, and have a smoother ride. I would recommend an Ultra if it has all the goodies that you want to pay for; otherwise, if it's just the ride, save yourself a ton of money and change out a couple of parts.

I think we'll be renting an Ultra when we take a trip out to AZ in November and I can tell you I am fearful of the same thing. From everything I hear they are super sweet!

I went from a '06 Street Glide to a '10 Limited. I had it lowered front and rear, don't notice the difference, it's not the same as the SG.
I also keep the passenger floorboards up when backing.

I really like all the extras on the Limited: 2-tone paint, 103", new trans, better ride, better seat, heated grips, lowers, tourpak, chrome wheels, 4 speakers, bag liners, titanium gauges, etc. Sure they can all be added to the SG but at a big cost and in the end the UL would be worth more than a tricked out SG, generally. Also, I noticed the bike felt more responsive stock than my 09 does with the Stage 1. Was the throttle recalibrated for '10 or does the trans have different gear ratios?

I think the SG is overall the best looking touring bike, but the Limited gives it a run for the money. But a few small changes would make the Limited even better like removing the chrome bumpers, adding smoked lenses, SG brake/turn lights, "low profile" passing lamp mounts w/bullet signals. Oh man the choices! Still havent sold the wife on the upgrade yet either, but once she see's it.......

Off topic I rode a V-Rod today too, anyone else ever ride one? Who came up with the riding position on those things? The ride was surprisingly comfortable and the motor revved easily and had a ton of power but I doubt I could do more then 30-40 miles without needing a break!
