When I first picked up my new 08 Road King mileage was mid 30's. Had SERT, Stage 1 and supposive dyno run from dealership and mileage stayed in mid 30's, maybe 38mpg on highway on a good day with no head wind. I don't ride aggresively either. Being new to HD's I thought this was normal performance and mpg.
Started doing research here and riding more to figure out my bike was running like crap. Not very responsive and poor mpg. Located a dealership 3hrs away with a creditable service department and an experienced dyno tuner on the staff.
After dyno tune bike was more responsive and pulling power increased. MPG increased to 39/41 city, to 43-46 highway (maybe better since I had dyno late last year at close of riding season)! I did speak with the dyno tuner afterwards and he said my hometown dealer probably just downloaded a map and left it at that, or the tuner was clueless what they were doing.
This year after the weather breaks and I start getting some miles again we'll see how good my mpg improves to.

Oh, I understand about Texas. I live in Texas City. My daily commute takes me to the Conroe area and back upwards to four times a week. I generally run around 70 mph as much as traffic permits. I've had a few round trips in the last few weeks were the winds were relatively calm, nothing more than 3 to 5 mph. My mileage on those days ran in the upper 37's to the low 38's. On the windy days, I've gotten back down to the numbers you quote around 35 to 36 give or take.
When you're running those back roads in 5th, what kind of speeds are you averaging? I'm thinking you might be back down between 55 and 65 or so. I've done the same and also started pushing 40. So, IMO, the numbers you quote sound very reasonable for the conditions you describe.

I work in Webster so not far from you. I take the beltway to work and home everyday. Hard not to run fast on there and the bike runs very smooth doing 80.
You are correct. I am generally running between 55 and 65 mph in 5th. If I hit approaching 3000 rpms I will upshift to 6th. Anything less and it feels like it is lugging.
Gonna be a great week to ride.

You better, unless you want to get run over from behind! Originally Posted by Foot Patrol

I'll run the east side Beltway when I'm in the car and I-45 traffic looks like it's going to be heavier than usual or the electronic signs are reporting any accident problems ahead. When I'm on the bike, I just run the HOV lane. I really like the HOV. Don't have to worry about some idiot changing lanes on me. I was worried about tail gating when I first started running it but that hasn't proved to be an issue so far.Quote:

Thought so, and understood! My impression is that our riding styles aren't that far apart. You are correct. I am generally running between 55 and 65 mph in 5th. If I hit approaching 3000 rpms I will upshift to 6th. Anything less and it feels like it is lugging.

That sound pretty normal for me riding in town, because I ride it hard. On the highway I jump up to about 42-44 just cruising. But, yaying 11 or 12 dollars to fill up, that sure beats 60-80 dollars in the cage. Just have fun, and when you need gas, fill er up and keep going!
