Jim - that is a great question/consideration! What kind of GPS unit do you have?
It's gonna depend on the model and capability of your GPS.
My wife bought me a Garmin 1350T for Christmas. Great little unit... in the CAR. It does not have an audio out jack (or an MP3 player - more on that later). I have that on my bike... for now...
If your GPS has an audio out jack, you can always employ the AUX input of your stereo and pump the output there.
HOWEVER - i believe the best solution is this one...
Garmin 755, 765, 775, 785, 855, 885 models have three things that nake me happy:
1. An FM transmitter so no wire required to the AUX port.
2. A MP3 player (load your tunes up on a SD card and plug it into the GPS). While listening to your tunes, the GPS will also use the FM transmitter link for it's audio - much like a built in GPS in a car.
3. No external iPod or MP3 player required when using the GPS! So, no add'l mount to buy and clutter up your bars.
I'm leaning toward picking up a refurb 755 or 765 on eBay for around $160. Yes, these units are primarily designed for cars but at this price, if it lasts a few years I'll be happy. The refurbs have a one year warranty, just like new. I'll carry a plastic bag in my windshield bag for when it rains and just put it over the GPS until I can pull over and remove it.
Oh - there is a good comparison chart for Garmins here:

Hope that helps!

I have a TomTom One 125. Its not waterproof either but if I can help it, it wont get wet. The tank mount looks interesting for an XM or MP3 player but still not convinced on the GPS mount. I guess I would have to see one in person to get the real feel for it before I can pass true judgement.
