I found this site that has an oil pan to hold an extra quart of oil. Baker Drivetrain +1 oil pan.

http://bitchinbaggers.com/

It would be interesting to see if it really drops the temp of oil 10 to 30 degrees. Interesting site that might be worth checking out.

I believe I read somewhere in the owners manual that the normal operating temp for my 09 was 235*.

Oil coolers would make it better of course.

Since the emission standards have to be met, Harley goes so lean from all I have read.

The baggers/dressers heat up something fierce. Money comes in... I am getting an oil cooler for my 09 ultra.

All I can tell you is what I saw on my bike. After installing the oil temp gauge but before the oil cooler, I was getting an average reading of 230 once everything was fully warmed up. Get caught in traffic for any length of time and it would climb to 240-250 fairly quickly. I've seen as high as a little over 260 a couple of times. After the oil cooler install, average temps dropped to around 200-210. Getting caught in traffic will bring it up to 230 and so far, that's been the limit within the amount of time I've been in traffic. The good part is that once I'm moving again, the oil temps come back down again. That's something that didn't happen very quickly before the cooler installation, if at all, depending on the outside temps.

On the oil leak vs warm up question. I start my bike first thing in the morning and let it idle long enough to establish a solid oil pressure and then sit for maybe 30 seconds to a minute. I then ride off "gently." I've got about 3-4 miles to ride before I hit the freeway and at that point, simply accelerate normally (ie: not hot rodding it) up to speed, punch the cruise control, and make the commute to work. The bike was a year old at the end of February and I'm coming up on 17k miles and haven't seen any evidence of oil leaks anywhere on the bike. I did have a small drip after I installed the oil cooler but that was because I left one of the oil lines a little to the loose side. The instructions had said to be sure not to over tighten the clamps and I over compensated. That, of course, was no fault of Harley's or the oil cooler and was an easy fix during the next oil change.

FWIW!

Steve R.
