I changed out my stock compensator for the SE and did not need to remove the clutch to get the chain off. There is room to get the chain off, at least there was on mine!

I installed the SE comp about six months ago while my primary was apart to replace a tranny output-shaft bearing. It was back-ordered from most dealers at the time and mine happened to have one in stock, so I decided it was a sign from God and bought it. My tech was high on them, so that was an added incentive.

The result was no more rifle-shot starting and very smooth, quieter shifting. It didn't eliminate the neutral-to-first clunk, but everything else seems to be quieter, and my tech was impressed after taking it for a test-ride. "Shifts like butter," were his exact words.

Frankly, I didn't have any real complaints about the stock comp, so had it not been for the tranny work I would probably still have it installed.

Default need a bearing puller

cliker did you need some kind of puller to get the bearing out. I just finished my 103 255 cam job last week and took it for a 400 mile run today. seemed to get a bit looser near 400 mile mark. I still need to get the compensator and change to heavier clutch plate that came with 103 kit. I did the b168 cam bearing change when I did the cams. Guess I need to look at doing the bearing while its apart.

The compensator job isn't a real hard job. Just make sure to block off as much as you can to grind that lip down to get it off. Chain came off without removing clutch. Make sure you have your primary gasket, derby gasket and whatever oil your going back with.

It did get rid of the starting clunk. Thats a plus to me.

I actually got lucky....the rockers come stock with the SE compensator. I didn't know this until i was in the process of installing the procharger. They told me that for some weird reason these bikes come with the SE compensator.

Not everyone is having a problem with the noises heard on start up (i.e.; clunking, banging and grinding) but, I did. Changing to the SE comp eliminated all that and is no longer heard when I start it. My starter was changed by the dealer under the service bulletin and the noises were still there. So, I NEEDED it. Why can't some of you HD techs believe the improvement that is being experienced in starting by so many?
