i constantly see posts' regarding problems with the rubber strip flopping in the wind. there is nothing wrong with this rubber trim setup or the wellnuts, it works very well. if yours is flopping, it's not properly installed, plain and simple. not a dis, just a fact...

I am the first one to admit, I am new to the Road Glide - I rented a n 06 (5K miles) from Boston HD in July... Rode Nova Scotia for 8 days... Twice the rubber just below the middle of the windshield was flopping down - I just pushed it back up and it would stay for a while... I really do not see how it was not properly installed? My guess is - it is just a loose fit - as stated, The shield could be take off and a touch of silcone woud fix it... I have seen/read about this rubber trim from other riders.... sounds like some just fit tighter than others... ?????

My FLTRI is an '04. NEVER had a loose gasket on the windshield and have changed the windshield 4 times, I'd guess. The silicone dab every couple of inches in the channel of the gasket would certainly work....just use a toothpick or a tiny paintbrush.

I took the liberty of opening the box of that new trim unit that sells for 140.00. It is a three peice arrangement and there are aluminum ovoid peices that seem to replace the well nuts. The small parts are in a sealed bag along with the instructions, so I couldn't take a look at them to learn of the installation. It looks to be more complicated than it needs to be! Maybe we'll have a good explanation of how this all goes together from a buyer.........have to stay tuned, I guess.

I road my first RG today (rented an '06) rode it for 4.5 hrs. Great bike but I noticed...at some point...since I wasn't looking for it......that the the rubber seals around the shield were loose and although they weren't flapping around, it didn't look good at all.

Rental place said they all do that....or u can crazy glue it down but since they wash their rental bikes a lot...they don't crazy glue anything.
All I said was for a $20K bike....that's very weak. Hopefully the chrome thing fixes it.

Noticed the shorter windshield. Do you get alot of air. I tried the shorter one from HD and it blew my sunglasses off.

I assume this question is for me...Yes, I get a lot of air with the 8" shield. It's a bike and I like to be "in the wind." I paid $55 for it shipped from hdforums member zookhd. I like the shorter one around town and I put the original 16" shield back on for longer trips.

The rubber gasket needs no silicone or adhesive. Bottom line is the rubber trim needs to be pinched between the outer fairing and windshield, and the screws pulling the wellnuts tight. If the trim is not properly tucked in and pinched it will never hold. I'm constantly switching windshields and have zero issues. It's a good setup imo.

Nice point on the rubber gasket - I am getting my fairing to engine guard brackets from Chicago on Wed, I will follow your advice and see how it works...

I have an '03 and think that the current system works fine when installed correctly. I came from an Ultra and E.G. windshields seem to have a much better design. Not sure why we have well nuts and E.G. have brass screws but the brass screws give a much more secure feeling when installing the shield. I think they also reduce the risk of overtightening as you can feel a solid contact as they tighten up.

So, I guess my opinion is that while it works it is a poor design. I have to manage to keep the windshield trim in place while tightening the various screws with 2 washers on them all while tightening enough but not over tightening the shield into the well nuts. I think most of us have lost a well nut into the fairing on the Road Glide. Not sure why all the complexity is needed..

Now if someone could just tell me how to keep the gasket that is between the inner and outer fairing in place, I'd be a happy camper! They all seem to come loose at the top end by the windshield.
