Default Oil Temp Gauge

I put a R.M. oil temp gauge in were the air temp gauge was this winter.Rode about 50 miles @75 mph it was 75 degrees out gauge read 220.So i checked temp in the oil pan 195.Are these RM gauges very accurate? Is the HD gauge any better?I calibrated the hand held so i know it was right. What is the best oil temp gauge for the fairing?

Where the sending unit is located affects the reading, the temp of the oil coming from the engine is much hotter then the temp of oil going back to it or anywhere inbetween. My Harley guage's sending unit is in the oil reservoir and it seems to read within 5-10 deg of my shop dip stick tester, close enough.

In a discussion with Jagg, of oil-cooler fame, I was told the pan was the best place to measure the oil temp since it was the first stop after circulating from the engine. I can say that the temp on my HD gauge jibes with a meat thermometer and a non-contact IR thermometer within a few degrees, so I'm happy with that.

When you say "RM" are you referring to a McKuen gauge?
