Man, I miss those old shovel/4 speeds!
Just clean it up, give it a full service/tuneup and ride it!!
It's a good strong engine. Worry about a rebuild when it needs one.

I had a 84 Electra Glide, It was belt driven. I am told that was the first year. It was a great bike.

They were a good strong motor.
Don't worry about a rebuild until it's needed.

Well the first thing you need to do is get a Factory Service Manual (99482-84) and Part Catalog (99456-84A).

Do not get a Clymer's or some other after market manual. They will not have the detailed information you will need to care for the model you have. Oh, it will have information for oil changes and other such mundane stuff. But if you need in depth information. You will be out of luck.

@ Totinthepeach - it is indeed belt drive.

I have the service manual - thanks for the part # of the parts manual - I'll order that too.

Appreciate the input everyone!

I had an 83 FLH. That was the first year for the belt drive. The first improvement Harley made after breaking away from AMF.

...actually..the 1980 Sturgis was the first Modern day belt bike...but when you think about it...the first Harleys had belts...leather ones at that!...it went Belts...to chains....back to belts...

Well my stock 1984 flhs shovelhead is a shovelhead upper and a shovelhead lower.shovelhead in the middle too..so was the only other !984 flhs shovelhead i ever saw.
I had a guy pull up to me on a 1984 flhs evo.
It was all evo evrything.same year though.. Had a dif/frame /dif everything.
Never saw a stock 1984 flhs shovelhead/ evo combination.

In fact i have the manual and -there isn`t one.

Also i have the harley davidson card for a 1984 flhs shovelhead and it`s all shovelhead.

Do ya think because there is a 1984 flhs shovelhead and a 1984 flhs evolution that that`s causeing some people to think that harley combined engines too?
