I agree. Lights and siren make a lot of people do really stupid things. On the interstate I don't even turn my siren on unless I really need it, I'm outrunning it anyway.
Absolutely. Any EVOC class will tell you at approximately 60 MPH you are outrunning your siren.
Oh, and gm9, you are exactly the type of person I enjoy speaking to - ignorant, close-minded and full of opinions and some sort of 'divine right' sense. Should have known this thread would turn into a LEO bashing convo...like all the others before it.
Off to disobey every law since it's a job perk! Doughnuts anyone?
There is a fellow, Jerry "motorman" Palladino, current or retired motorcycle LEO. He has these DVDs "Ride like a Pro". My understanding is he trains police departments througout the U.S.
Don't hold me to this but I think he teaches motorcyle cops to ride about 10mph faster then traffic in the left lane for safety reasons. Does anyone know if this is correct?
We do it all the time here in Denmark for no reason what so ever. Speeding and in general not following the law....any law.
Its not because we have a job to do. Getting a head of traffic so that we can observe more cars, bikes ect when we patrol the streets. No its because its just fun to drive faster than everyone else and rubbing it in their faces while we do it.
And if someone sticks on my tail while I'm speeding for no reason. I pull him over and write him a ticket .... its all fun being a cop.....!
I dont know about Pa. but in most states unless an officer is rolling code (lights and siren) they have to obey traffic laws just like everybody else!
Pulling in behind him probably would've got him to ask for your autograph!
Yeah, they're supposed to obey the laws, but they don't--not here anyway. There is the "code 1", which means "acknowledge this call," and that means no siren or lights and obeying all laws, including speed limits. A code 2 means "proceed immediately with lights but no siren," but there is no code that allows speeding without either. No cop will ever give another cop a ticket, and you can be sure of that. Our chief was involved in a minor traffic accident a few months ago on his motorcycle and although it was clear he was at fault he never got a ticket. They shouldn't be above the law like this, IMO.
I agree that if you pulled behind a cop who was speeding he could write you up if he was so inclined, and I doubt if you'd have any defense or recourse in citing him for doing the same thing.
To the LEO's out there. Don't take anything personal, for the most part we all understand where you hafta come from. I would say that 90% of the forum members would bail off their scoots and help you subdue a bad guy if you needed help. It's just that there's always that 10% that give any profession a black eye. Yours is no different. Most of us have run onto that 10% at one time or another. Besides, we gotta have somebody to unload on once in a while specially if there aren't any Goldwingers around to pick on. I believe the answer is, I don't care who ya are or what ya do...if your human you're gonna speed once in a while. ANYBODY that says they haven't, or never do, I would hafta disagree with. Some people may not like it, but I for one am glad to see a LEO coming up behind me and then go around me, especially on the I. I don't care where you're going, or why...as long as you put a lot of distance between me and you...the faster the better. Most of us are on your side, we just show it a little different. Its just natural to vent a little bit if you've paid any speeding tickets. Hope to see yall out there riding somewhere....off duty and on your scoots, if yall are on duty I hope you only see me in your rear view mirror and I'm getting smaller real fast.
I remember when i used to catch up & ride chp a$$ if they wern't advertising on the [freeway] just like it sounds. but always checked the rear view doin it BACK IN THE DAY.
My question is did that officer have more control of the road and self protection by moving faster then most traffic?
Yes, you don't have to monitor so much to what is happening behind you when you are the faster traffic. You have a lot more control and react a lot faster to situations in front of you. Its almost impossible to react quickly to what happens behind you. I am the most comfortable when I am the faster traffic for that reason.
