I checked the AC voltage on the leads coming out of the stator and it is 28.7 at idle so I am assuming that I have a regulator that went south. Thanks for the help guys!

I suggest that you let it run at a high idle for at least 10 minutes with your meter hooked up. My stator would work for that long and then it would give up. I used two small straight pins to stab the wires and make connections to my meter. Be sure to put something on the stab holes after because oil may leak out there. If the stator passes the test, that is. It's a matter of a burned connection on the stator that makes partial connection when cool but opens up when warm. This is a single phase stator winding unlike the reliable three phase ones used on cars. ALL the output is carried by one wire. If there is a weakness anywhere along that wire it will heat up and eventually open up.
