Starter ring gear - Broken teeth
'07 SG. First found a very small piece when changing the Primary oil, about a year ago. Monitored it. No issues with the Bike. This time found a larger piece. The Mechanic took apart the clutch pack and gear and found three broken teeth in three locations. I guess I got lucky as all the pieces went to the drain plug. He has had to repair four others like this before mine, all '07's. One of them was his own. Unfortunately HD only sells the Clutch pack complete. You cannot buy just the ring gear. $500 + for parts alone. Ouch.
Next time you have the Primary cover off, check the gear.
