Default Advice on Road King Purchase please....

I've been lurking for a couple weeks and learning all I can.
Hoping to purchase a Road King for my husband. Mostly for him but also for some 2-up riding which will be more often as the years progress and kids get even older.

I was leaning towards a 2005-2007 but then I've read so much about the new body style in '09 plus the ABS brakes are appealing. And prices are pretty much the same from 05-09...seems to be right now $14-$18.

There's also an '10 that a dealer has. It has hard bags [which we want] red/black cruise no ABS. $18750 + $1k in accessories at shop.

So since the deals are so close should we just jump on the 10? Any flexibility in pricing do you think?

We're paying cash so OUCH.

Originally I was thinking $10-$13k....then I was thinking $15k and now here I am....

only other thing I think we'll want soon is the sundowner seat or another seat that will be more comfy for long rides.

Appreciate advice.

If price was close would you go for the 2005-2007 that had more extras possibly or a 2009 or go for the 2010?

Thanks.

Trish

I'd go for the 2010 with a Sundowner seat. Why have regrets later.

I suggest you do what I did, I wanted a king and in 2006 bought a 1800 mile '04 with 10k in chrome on it for $14,500.
Then last year the wife was riding with me so much and I wanted a stereo and cruise and so on so we rented an Ultra, we loved that so we tried to sell the king off and on for 6 months. Well 3 weeks ago we sold the king for 13k and bought a 233 mile '08 Ultra for cheap.
The point I am trying to make is if it is a 1st Harley I would buy a low mile , clean RK foe 10-13 and ride it for a bit to make sure it is what you want before spending more and taking a hit if you decide you want something different. Oh and if you do go '08 or newer get the ABS.

Default had the same problem

when i first started looking wanted to spend around 10k. found mine for 14,500 and knew i had to have it.

when you find the right one you'll know. and then it won't matter how much it cost's you will have to have it.

I asked about ABS and they said it can't be added at the dealer.

Anyone know pricing and all that ? Thanks.

good advice. And I agree...I never buy new cars...let the others take a hit...the problem I'm having is there's not much difference between an 08 or 09 and a 2010.

And if I get an '08 will I wish I had the 09 body? or Hubby...

but maybe I should just go older.....it seems like <$15k is younger than 2005. Is there a particularly favorable year before than? Thanks.

I'm also not in a hurry so maybe there will be a deal to be had on an 05 or 08 or whatever.

THANKS.

Hi Trish,

+1 on the ULTRA
+1 on the USED (low miles)

and... here is a link to check motorcycle values.

Best of luck, don't forget you can always have your dealer check out any used bike before you buy.

Take care,
Tom
