Some really stupid comments here. Any business that has to close it's doors, is not good for anyone. Having owned a business and having to close it after 25 years due to the economic conditions, I can tell you it is heart wrenching. It's not rocket science, you have to make money to STAY in business. When you have to start traveling 100 miles to get to a HD dealer, some here will be the first to bitch about that. If you think you can do better, go for it.
SORRY, to hear that. I bought my last two Ultra's from them. They did charge me MSRP, but gave me much more on trade then my local guy 2 miles from my home.. The guys on the counter were always helpful. I don't know why they couldn't have combined dealer ships. I would rather travel 40 mi then go to the guys in my own back yard.
Too bad. It's never good when any dealer closes their doors. Not good for the employees, not good for the owner/s, suppliers, ocassional customers, regular customers or the motorcycling community in general. The fewer dealers there are, the sooner prices will start to go up and service quality will drop.
In a lot of cases, it is not the dealer that is at the heart of the problem. Slow sales, lack of repair work i the shop and slow parts and accessory sales all contribute to a dealer being in financial trouble. Yes, there is in some cases, mismanagement but for the most part, the recession hit them pretty hard as motorcycles are a discetionary purchase.
Yes, production is also being cut by the MOCO, but I don't think to pre99 levels, I heard to pre 03 levels. In either case , if the economy does pick back up, there will be extended waiting periods for new bikes and yes, mabe even prices above MSRP.
No sense complaining, either pay it, wait, or go elsewhere, it is just the way it is going to be.
Yes, their closed also and from what I'm hearing, Salem County is close behind.
Mills is not closing, from what i was told by the head guy there Vinnie..they are actually going into a partnership with Hannums (they have 2 dealers in PA)..and from what he said it sounds like they are planning to relocate into a bigger place more toward Mount Holly (i know expansion kinda goes against everything else we hear these days, but i'm just passing on what i heard from the horse's mouth) I hope Mills doesn't change much when the whole partnership kicks in..they are a good Mom and Pop type shop. (NOT like Trenton used to be..they deserved to go belly up..HORRIBLE) Mills has Been in the same location for 50 years. I bought my first HD there about 14 years ago, and just bought my 2010 SG there before Christmass.
As for the MoCo... i have a little info from the Mills parts people.. i was in there a few weeks ago looking into getting a SESG seat.. they said it lists for about $350.. i said "well i guess i'll wait for one of your 20% off days" (anyone that knows Mills knows that a few times a year they do open houses where they try to blow out their annex..which is a seperate building they use for clearence...actually used to be a Burger King....and they will also cut 20% off of accessories..even if you order them). So the 2 parts people kinda rolled their eyes when i said that.. i know them pretty well..so i asked "what's that about" .. they told me that the MoCo passed down instructions to completely do away with all Tent Sales, Annexs, and 20% blanket discounts at open houses.... They were told that the MoCo feels that it "cheapens the brand"
I know there are still a few HD places online that you can find discounts at, but i really like going into a local dealer, seeing people i know, shootin' the S**t a little, and getting a decent deal on some parts....just feels like the RIGHT way to do business......
ohh.. and 1 more thing..as one of the posts here mentioned...if the MoCo does go back to pre '99 production numbers that is fine by me..it should make my 2010 hold its value nicely...
