Default Help for a longer ride

New to the biking. Bought a 2010 Ultra last August and loved it. Bought a 2010 Road King 2 weeks ago. I have been riding both for shorter rides of up to 300 miles. I am leaving 2 weeks from Sat with a couple of buddies for a 2500 mile trip. I am wondering if you guys that have been on the longer trips could tell me what I should be taking and am probably not. Thanks in advance.

Hey there CR. There is plenty of information out there on this board. Give the search function a shot; I know I have personally answered this question about 10 times. If that does not work in answering your question, PM me and I will sent you some links and some attachments. Ride safe.

Good question and deserving of an answer. Perhaps someone familiar with the best answers already posted might identify the best one.

As far as I'm concerned, other than the necessary change of cloths:

A basic tool kit that allows the tightening of most critical fasteners (and removal of derby cover).

Synthetic oil (use in a pinch in all 3 holes).

Dealer locations and phone numbers

Roadside assistance contacts if you subscribe

Tire pressure gauge

Cell phone

flash light

duct tape

tire repair kit (plug kit)

gps

ear plugs

rain suit

a good map

zip ties

handi wipes

back-up credit card

cash

back-up keys (exchange with a buddy)

In reading your post it looks to me like you are asking which bike to take? If that is your question, the answer is the Ultra.

If Dawg is right about the question I certainly agree with the answer.

Without a doubt the Ultra. The 2500 miles is long but not that bad, I've done 1200 miles in 18 hrs on an ultra. The list of things that were posted in my opinion was right on. If your going solo then you'll have plenty of room if not and you plan on staying in one place for a while, have the majority of your stuff sent UPS. I pack a tea bag on my luggage rack that has the majority of my cloths and I can just take that inside every night. I also bring a cover two things, keeps the dew off and also prying eyes on what you have. Have a great trip!

Do yourself a favor... take about $200 in twenties and hide it somewhere in your saddlebags, water-tight and safe from anything that could happen to it. Why, you ask?
Worst-case scenario: You lose your wallet, AND all your cash.

At least now, you have enough back-up cash, that you can fill up your tank, get a motel room, buy an economy "pay-as-you-go" cell phone, and get some grub. You lose your wallet and all your cards are in it, you're screwed. Lose your cell phone, get it soaked, or drop it so it breaks, and you're double-screwed. Ever try getting an out-of-the-way gas station, motel, or diner to take a hundred? A fifty? Ever try making a long-distance call from a pay-phone (anytime within the last 15 years)?

Yes, until you "harden up" take the Ultra. J/k geezers... LOL

I'd add a medi-kit and some basic meds too.
