Default Mechanic is scratching his head!

Took my Ultra in for a new set of shoes. All went well and as usual he treated me like a valued customer. When I dropped it off I mentioned that the neutral light was not coming on as it should. The mechanic must have been feeling froggy so he asked, do you know where it is so I replied somewhere between 1st and 2nd. He hopped on the bike after a minor laugh and tried it himself only to find that the light would not come on after the first couple tries. Then the light came on in slow motion meaning it was at first very faint then became brighter. I left the bike there for the day while at work and returned after I got off. He said that he was not able to locate the problem in any wiring and did not know what else to do. He did document the problem and said he would try other sources.

Anyone here have any thoughts that you would not mind sharing...thanks a bunch.

Could be the ground for the neutral switch. But the neurtal switch could be sticking. Try putting it in neutral if the light is on but not bright, lightly tappping the neutral switch. If the light comes on bright the switch is sticking if not look for the ground.

It's amazing how a HARLEY DAVIDSON shop tells you to try other sources. I had my bike there and they ended up saying it would be best to take it to a local shop WTF these guys are supposed to be certified HD mechanics. Anywho it's a wiring issue mostly ground but could be a short.

Often it is just that the neutral swictch needs to be cleaned. It's an easy job.Disconnect the wires and remove it from the trans top cover, give it a wash in some cleaner.

I had the exact same issue on my UC. They replaced the light module that has the neutral light, low oil pressure light, etc. No problem in over a year.

I have had them replace the switch numerous times, replace the o-ring etc.
Never had them replace the light module.
May be the trick
You wouldnt have the part number on that would you?
If it is the little light module in the fairing above the gauges? They did replace that...

I assume your dealing with the 03 in your sig right?

Its a simple ball switch, pull the wires and connect them, does the dash light come on? If so its the switch, pull it connect the wires back and push the ball up, does the light come on? No replace the switch, yes install the switch back in the cover and torque it to spec, does the light come on? No replace the switch, yes, go ride!
