My 92 fxr has a bad tap even to a point of knocing hard on the top end front cylinder when it gets warm. my guess is lifter gone bad i put new seals on the original valves it has short open exhaust no baffle so i do get back fire when slowing down im actually scared to ride it cause it sounds like its going to sling the push rod i recently replaced the rings and top end gaskets thats about it i would hate to buy new lifters and that not be the problem as ive read in so many cases if anyone has found any more out i would highly appreciate the info cause im to the point of getting rid of it

I can still hear some ticking with my 3/4 helmet but is hardly noticable. I give the TP boxes and shims most of the credit.
That's what I have read the issue is as well: rocker side play. My TC88 started making more upper end noise about the same mileage as my TC96 is doing so maybe thiss is the point at which is starts to wear and get worse. Guessing you can shim them without pulling the heads, right?

I have the standard valve train noise in my 07 Heritage. I can understand that. But what I have that is unique is a loud tapping upon deceleration after the engine is warmed up. It only happens when I'm ridding at a high speed and then suddenly release the throttle, like during shifting. I get a few very loud taps. If I pull in the clutch and rev up a couple of times it gets quieter until it is gone. It comes back after some more constant speed ridding.
I'm going to try and get a recording on my cell phone and post it. Maybe even take it to my dealer. On second thought, I'll just post it. My dealer thought is was worn cam chain tension shoes and charged me 800 bones to replace them. Noise is even worse now.

'luck.

Default tap tap

my 07 tapped and my 2010 103 taps. i had a 1340 that actually tapped a tune when you throttled it right. Each bike ran great even into the 60,000 mi range and there after. Unless it startes to effect the performance or you start humming tunes to it, ride it long and hard. If it's gonna break it will.Until then ride

I can't hear anything on my motor with that loud azz noise coming out of the tail pipes. It could come apart before I could hear anything.

Anyone put a thin layer of high temp sound deadening mat on the inside of the rocker cover to see if that will quieten it? Just an idea for the brave and adventurous.

I just changed the other day to Mobil 1 syn and that tick got a lot quieter. I thought it maybe a lifter. But I guess these motors have self adjusting lifters.

Thumbs down

Wow, didn't expect to find this many ticking hogs when I did the search. My bike has always had a slight tick here and there, mostly around 2000 rpm.
Now that I did a Andrews 48H cam swap with the S&S adjustables it seems to be noticably louder, but the motor runs like a scalded dog without any miss or complaining. Everything was adjusted to the letter and double checked, loctite, etc.

It's almost as if the higher lift and duration work the crap factory lifters too hard and they can't handle the load at steady engine speeds during a cruise.
Jump on it and the revs come up and it goes away, release the throttle and it is quiet, until it gets close to 2000, tick tick tick tick tick....gone again by 1800.

I'm either going to try some hot dog lifters, or...Once it blows up I guess i'll know what it was?
