Default Seat Modification - Step by step

I took my 09 RG to Bitchn Stitchn in Lakewood, CO Thursday night and they reworked my seat for me. It was a cool process to watch and I took photos along the way. Brian did the work on my seat and I talked to Dan, the owner, quite a bit too. Both have been in the business pretty much their whole lives. Brian use to do custom seats for hot rods with his dad and then moved on to motorcycles. He had done 3 other seat during the day before mine. Each one is custom shaped to the rider. Here's the shop.

Here's the stock HD foam - notice the curled up edges and sunken middle. Know anyone big enough to ride one of these with a butt shaped like that?

They had me sit on the foam and put my legs in a couple of positions (floorboards & highway pegs) while they marked up the foam to identify the pressure points. Then Brian started the rough shaping.

Then they fine tune it a bit more by having you sit in it again and again and tell them where you feel pressure points until it feels like you are evenly supported.

Then they cut a slot out and inset the gel pad into the remaining factory foam.

And put a little extra glue on the edges to make sure it stays in place.

Then the coat the entire seat surface and the back side of the top layer of foam to recover the entire seat. I had them do a little shaping to the passenger seat as well for my wife, but since she wasn't there they just made some standard mods to get ride of the usual pressure points and added a layer of foam to her piece after shaping, but before adding the top layer of foam.

Then it was time to cut the slits in the foam for the rider backrest and the water drain slot in the rider's seat before putting the cover back on.

Here's a couple of the final product. Still has the factory cover, but notice how much of a smoother profile there is on the rider's seat. I now sit "in the seat" rather than "on it". It also made the backrest more supportive since I'm about an inch lower, the backrest rides higher on my back.

I won't be able to get a long full day ride in for a couple of weeks because of other commitments, but I'll report back when I do.

BTW - Dan and Brian are really nice, down to earth, easy going guys. Even offered me a beer while they were wrapping things up! Oh, and I know someone will ask, so it was about $250 for all the work.

Nice. Good photos. I'm in a personal battle with my stock seat right now. I'm working with Chuck at CC about modifying the stock SG seat.

I just bought a 08 Road Glide seat. It's super awesome just like it is.
Guess my butt IS shaped like that!

Nice mod though! Great pics...

Thanks Rope. Gettin' the fit right will surely add to more miles!

LP - Glad the 08 seat works for ya'. That has me thinking. HD has been making seats for how long? Well, by now, you'd think they have it down to a science and have more comfortable stock seats.

I just did my own, and posted the process in the mods under $50 thread - I have about $26.00 in it and it sits perfect. If you're not handy or have no confidence I wouldn't attempt this.

Quadancer,
Where's the mods under $50 thread? I can't find it.
Thanks,

Had my seat done by Brian @ Bitchn Stitchn as well in Feb. got about 700 miles on since, and I love it. Not only is more comfortable they were able to get me closer to the ground so I can stand flat footed. Well worth the money and cheaper then a new seat.
