Oh, one negative to report: I had suspended a large leather toolbag from the front towel bar over the fender, you can see it in the pic. What happened was the fender came up and slapped the bottom of it on every bump; scratched the crap outta my fender. The smaller toolbag might not have done so.
Thankfully, I was able to buff most of it out. I didn't get the windshield bag for the same reason: I expected it would scratch everything up there.
..ok, here's what ya need..get this tent..it's new, packs relatively small, and it's lightweight..wait until it's 20% off..sign up for the e-mail newsletter adds..
10 1/2 lbs for a 4 person tent? This is overkill. Go to any backpacking/hiking store or website and get specs on a 2/3 man tent that will pack in around 5-6 lbs. Write down the models you like and get 'em on ebay for under $100.
Very true man. You'll want to spend a bit on other gear anyway. Save pill bottles to put fastfood salt, pepper, and condiment packs in. Take a few lunch bags, freezer bags, and the plastic painter's sheets I mentioned. You'll want to separate dirty clothes from clean, hence the freezer bags. I'm thinking of finding one of those hunter's utility belts to put stuff in too, but mostly the problem is clothes bulk and weight.
Camping gear and a passenger will really slow down a bike; you may be dropping a gear for some hills, and that's why every pound counts. Lots to be said for stuff you can wash in a sink.
Our 3 man tent is 9lbs - but it has the rain cover and stakes included.
I use a Sierra Designs Electron, lifetime warranty, you could pack 3 of them in one saddlebag. Like all my Sierra Designs tents, bought new off Ebay, 60% off retail for $90.00. I may camp where temps are between 30 and 50-degrees F (hypothermia territory) so I use only sleeping pads since air mattresses with hollow tubes strip warmth away from my down bag through convection.
Which is why I'm going to try the pool floats this summer. My body heat is outrageous: I usually just use a sheet at home. Sweaty sleep makes for a lousy night.
