Did painted inner Fairing on Road Glide
A friend has given me the inner from an EGlide, I'm wondering how hard this job would be to do myself, any idea what a fair price would be to get it painted?
If I'd of had the money I would have swaped out the air gauge but at this point it is still there being usless. I did however properly locate the ambient temperature sensor which was not where it should have been after having my heated handlegrips installed at the time of purchase. Maybe that will help
I wasn't aware of a radio bracket issue but did see some minor rubbing on one side so will revisit that in the winter or possibly sooner. Now that I've had it apart taking off the outer fairing is not a big deal.
3 hours labor to paint @ $40 hr $120
.5-1hr prep raw parts (sand/clean) $20
Flex additive 5
Adhesion promoter 5
Hazardous Waste 3
Paint Materials bsd on $26hr per pnt hr 91
Tax on paint and additives 6.06
--------
Fair price would be $250.06
If you can find someone good who will do it for $25 per hour and $24 for paint then you have found a pretty good deal. Of if you have some slip on mufflers you might be able to work out a deal with someone in the MD area
Make sure the additives are used. The adhesion promoter helps the paint stick to the plastic surface and the flex does just that. Helps the paint flex as needed. Might be important on a vehicle like ours.
As far as how hard the job was I'd say it wasn't that difficult but I do have an above average mechanical and troubleshooting ability due to past work history. Id say if you have a reasonable amount of ability and patience then most people who ride should be able to do this job. I would very strongly suggest having the service manual and going through the procedures in there a few time before doing it. The hardest parts of the job were getting the switches out of the nallace and back in, and next time I would honestly tape them off as they are sealed switches and there's enough room to tape them well. Would have to ask the painter about that one though. Also on the RG the hooks under the main wiring trough aren't another place to run wires. They actually hook the front fairing to inner. Duh. Thats what I get for staying up all night. Hope this helps.
