If I were to have only one bike (which I do) it would be the Road King (which it is). If I had two it would be a Street Glide and a Deluxe. I don't want to be behind a windshield or fairing when I'm riding around town. The Road King is a versatile bike--2up seat, windshield when touring, solo seat, no shield around town.
Coming from a sporty and going to a RK, I tested a SG and could not have that fairing in front of me. Something I'd get used to if I did very long rides perhaps but the clear removable windscreen on the RK does a great job.
Im with you!!!!! The Radio with Xm and nav is so hard to get use to, not to mention the wind protection
I have an 06 RKC and an 07 SG. I think the perfect bike would be a regular Road king with an after market fairing painted to match or custom with a killer sound system.

The option to put the wind protection on and off is priceless to me. It seems the higher windscreen of the RK suits me better (at 6'4") than the shorter SG fairing which lets wind hit me in the face and I see so many ads/posts for an extention modification.
Also, I can listen to music anytime but my V-twin engine note and Rush roar go with riding much better. Can always do the ipod thing if necessary and I have a removable Garmin nav Ram mounted already. Too bad you took my opinion as a my dog is better than your dog problem

I almost agree. I'll keep the Road King Classic, and would love to add an after market fairing with that killer sounds system and GPS. Right now I'm loving the concept of the Viper Information System that Dragonfly sells, but at a cost of almost 4 grand -- I can wait.
BTW, I think it's the "almost" agreeing that makes these bikes so wonderful.

many have started on rk then later wrestled with trading up to a faring or adding an aftermarket but buy the time u buy adn paint add stereo the cost can add up to 2000 easy.in my 20"s u wouldnt catch me with a windsheild 30"s never without a windsheild 40"s and its batwing all the way.
Within a year, I'll have a Dragonfly with top shelf sound for trips, but I got to have the option of removing that fairing.
And you won't have the bullshit Harley sound system where the cd skips and the stock speakers are garbage. Eventually the ol lady wants a dragon fly fareing for her RKC and if I crashed my SG and had to replace it I'd go Road King and be able to remove the fareing and have a wind shield or . . . . . nothing. Seems like a no brainer.
I swore my next bike was going to be a RK, but then I started looking at the SG
I was the same way. My dream Harley was the Road King. One day my dealer which I purchased my first Harley from a 08 Street Bob was having a demo day.
Got the chance to ride both a couple of times each. After my final ride my salesman asked me "well what did you think". I told him the Street Glide was the winner by far. About a month later he calls me with a heck of a deal on my baby.
Moral of the story is do your research. If there's a dealer near you take advantage of the Super Ride promo they have going on now. Or better yet if there's a dealer near you having demo rides.
The only way to know which bike fits you is to ride both and weigh the pro's and con's of each.
Do your homework or prepare to spend a lot of money trying to make a bike into something it is not.
Since '98 I have had 4 batwing fairing bikes, a softail, a dyna and 3 Roadkings. I really enjoy the look of the SG I have plus it offers all the protection I want/need. You can buy any height or shape of shield to meet your desire and any amount of add-ons you can imagine as well.
I do not enjoy riding down the road anymore with my face distorted from all the wind. I passed an older fellow riding his beautiful RK last weekend without the shield and his face looked like a plastic bag stuck on the front of a Nascar front spoiler. Sorry, that's not fun for me anymore.
