Im working on a bike that has been sitting in storage for 25 years. Fuel tank is full of rust. Is there a good way that I can clean it? Any products on the market that will clean it?
Thanks for the Help.
A lot will depend on how the tank is designed. Safe to say if it has sat for 25 years it won't have FI. As to cleaning it, I rebuilt an old MG Midget and it had a similar issue. Get a handful of galvenized 3/8 nuts & lockwashers from the chainlink fence area in Lowes or Home Depot. Drop them in the tank & shake, rinse and repeat. You will be amazed at what comes out. Keep at it until it rinses out clear. The old car had a 8.5 gallon tank & I finished it out in about an hour. I ran several thousand miles before I sold it.
Marbles, Small rocks, Ceramic Pieces, etc
Just keep them small enough not to dent the tank..
Or put them on the Air compresser or something that vibrates for a while
Yup put them in the tank and you'll see what comes out
acetone works also after the nut and bolt trick but the acetone will clean it good enuff that it will want to rust up right away. Id use the nut and bolt trick then a good wash with hot soapy water then acetone then dry it good and apply a sealer to the inside then it should be good to go.
Take it to a good radiator shop. have them soak in caustic to get any varnish out of it. Then use a good rust remover (naval Jelly) to get the rust out, and use a good quality gas take sealer. I've had excellant results doing this with old tanks.
