In process of replacing my swing arm shaft after finding the left side nut had come off and messed up the trreads on that side. Needed to replace the rubber mounts as well.
The manual calls for alignment using this tool. Now Jims is about $700 and George's is $370. The dealer wants $160 to do it and I would have to leave off my two into 1 exhaust due to the upper pipe being in the way so I would need to rent a truck to get it to them. With that cost I would buy the tool before having the dealer do it
I have used a 6' level and a laser level to align in the past so was never sure if the correct tool did a better job.
Any one use one of these? Are they worth the money?
The engine alignment is for getting both wheel straight so your method with a straight edge is just as good or better the the Harley tool. I used a string line to correct front to back and a plumb bob to align the vertical adjustment on my 07 touring bike. My bike left the factory way out of alignment and it made a huge difference to the handling and helped with my bike's rear steer.
Good luck with it

What do you mean when you say that you used a string line? Did the string have some kind of bow attached which kept it tight and straight?
Also, could you elaborate on the plumb bob and how you used it to align the vertical adjustment.
I'd like to hear alternative methods to alignment also. I'm upgrading the swingarm on a 00 RK amd replacing motor mount and lower stabilizer. This info might come in handy.
Can someone explain the process a bit of using these alternative methods it would be awesome info for all of us. I gather the theory but the porcess would be informative.
Thanks to PhilM who rented me his HD alignment tool I just finished up putting my bike back together. That is one slick and easy way to align these bikes. I used a 6' level and laser levels in the past and even tried the string method , but this works so well - no guess work.
