I have used string in the past with great results. Next time I have to perform an alignmnet I'm going try Jake's idea from Glide Pro.

Phil charged me $50 which I thought was very fair as the dealer wanted $160 to do the alignment and I would of had to leave off my exhaust as my collector was in the way. This way I could do it before I put it back on and did not have the bike down waiting to get it in to the dealer. Plus I know it was done correctly by someone who cares about the bike.
I do not like to pay someone to do a job that I can do myself.
