eng overheating
hey guys
I have an 05 Electra Glide Classic. Yesterday when l was leaving downtown I got stuck in traffic. I was bumper to bumper for several miles. It was about 70 deg out. I could feel the off the engine. The eng started to idle rough and dropped to about 800 rpm. As soon as I got back up to speed everything went back to normal. Today the bike ran fine. I called the dealer and described what happened. I was told that I probably experienced the staged cooling procedure that fuel injected eng have. Anybody else run into this? What happens when it really gets hot?
Thanks.

Here is some info from another post.

220 degrees is nothing to be concerned about. The TC can run between 200 to 250 without problems. I would suggest that you try Mobil 1 V Twin instead of the SE oil. The mobil 1 is a full synthetic and will usually drop the temps a bit. I notices a difference when going from Syn3 to Mobil 1 V Twin
The TC also has a system to protect against overheating that works like this, these are engine temps, not oil temps
Injected Twin Cam High Temperature Idle
The 2002 and later fuel injected Twin Cam engines use a three phase heat
management system to reduce engine temperature under extreme conditions. Be
aware that a rider with a very hot engine may notice the affects of this three phase
heat management system and incorrectly assume an idle problem exists.
Phase 1 - At approximately 320Ëš F the ECM will gradually reduce engine idle
speed until the engine temperature drops or the engine reaches 800 rpm.
Phase 2 - If engine temperature reaches 338Ëš F the ECM richens the air/fuel
ratio to provide additional cooling.
Phase 3 - If the engine temperature reaches 356Ëš F fuel injector pulses are
interrupted. The air drawn in and expelled helps cool the engine further.
Since there is no combustion it would be perceived as a misfire. This third
stage will only happen when the motorcycle is stationary.

Hey! I have an '05 Ultra that had the same symptoms. Youre machine has a 4 step engine temp management system. First it will slightly increase your RPM's to bleed off heat. If thats not enuf, it will enrichen the air/fuel. Still not enuf? Next it will start skipping spark and let every 10th or 20th load of fuel/air out the exhaust without firing it off. If all that fails, your machine should shut down. I added the large oil cooler that helps while youre moving and switched to Mobil1 V-Twin. It recently won the Full Synth Shootout for like the 20th time. If i know im gonna sit for 5 min or more, or if get the misfire of the plugs not firing, I shut her down! All in all it's part of being in the H-D family. Enjoy and ride soooo safe!
P.S. I wonder if the first such similar question, probably asked of a dealer just past the turn of the century, went something like this....."Umm, the bike got really really hot and then it screached and died and now the kick starter wont even move" LOL

Not to worry with your Ultra. It's running as it should, however, 70 degrees out is not very hot to have that kind of engine temp problem. You might want to look into why your engine started the cooling procedures so early. My temp gage in my batwing is useless as it shows ambient air temp inside the fairing and not outside. It's coming out and then compass is going in.
I am currently running the SE Syn 3 oil in my 04 Ultra and have not had any problems and it has been in the 80's and 90's. I took my lowers off and I get more air across the motor and that might be why I'm not having any problems. Check with your dealer and don't let them BS you and you should be ok.
Good luck.

Unless I'm mistaken, the lowers should be removed above 50 degrees to prevent overheating on the ultras and I switched from the syn 3 to Mobil 1 V Twin and it ran a bit cooler and also noticably better too.

It's 100+ degrees here everyday. I ride every day. I've not experienced this yet, though I have not had too much time at stop lights...longest is about 5 minutes (stupid light won't change and I'm always waiting for a gap in traffic.)
I run Mobile 1 for cars in the bike, and I'm waiting on my oil cooler that was on back order...I have 4400 on my 6 month old '05 EG Standard...
Seems odd that your bike entered this cooling cycle...perhaps you have a sensor that is telling the module the bike is hotter than it is??? (Maybe mine is not working properly[

Like Mac, I ride frequently on days over 100 degrees. I have not yet had mine do it either. I have the oil cooler and run the Syn3 without any problems. The only thing that seems overheated is the rider.
