The wife and I are thinking of going to either Kauai or Maui this September for the anniversary. While there, why not rent a bike and see the island properly, I said to myself. It sounded good so I tried it out loud and she agreed! So, has anyone done this and if so any tips on what to look for and what to avoid?
...... i know there's a Harley rental on Kauai, and you could spend a couple 3 very pleasant days traveling from Hanalei on the north side to Waimea Canyon on the south side
Lived on Oahu for a number of years, and visited the other islands. Maui is better riding. Some roads are not maintained well, and have a lot of moss on the and can be wet, so corner carefully. The Hana highway on Maui is fantastic. I swear there is a waterfall every couple of miles. Never rods Kauai, but I visited. It is smaller, and the Na Pali coast is beautiful, but not a great ride. Given the choice Maui is the way to go. Given a bigger choice, the Big Island has the best riding.
Maui! Take the "Road to Hana" and stop often. It is now open all the way around, and the road is pretty good. If you plan on doint that, don't tell the rental company. My daughter lived on Maui for a couple of years, now lives on the Big island.
I would say Maui for sure. You can ride all the way around Maui, Kauai does not have a road that circles the island so you would have to drive up and then back down the same highway.
