So, I was chatting with the local dealer mechanic. I mentioned that I was going to need to loosen the banjo bolt by the master cylinder on the front brake in order to get the lever and controls rolled forward to where I want it. The metal part of the brake line is jamming into the handlebar and stopping forward rotation.
He got this funny look on his face and started talking about how with ABS systems, there are all sorts of special bleeding tools and a computer operated pump that need to be used whenever you work on the brake system.
Now, I suppose that if I were changing lines or something, maybe But, all I want to do is loosen that banjo bolt so I can rotate the hand grip assy forward.
If they work similar to a cars there is a modulation type pump that needs to be reset after brake work. I know on my wifes car the brakes would feel soft until I reset the abs pistons. But thats a car not a bike.
According to my service manual (08 Touring models), bleeding the brakes is done in the typical fashion as regular brakes. It only mentions using the 'Digital Technician' when the abs module was replaced or if more than one brake line was replaced to verify that the brake lines were installed in the correct positions.
Got ABS on mine and needed to do the same thing. Just cracked the banjo bolt loose, moved the fitting and re-tightened. Didn't loose a drop of fluid and brakes work just fine.

Yeah you need special tools and a lot of old time mechanics arent familiar with them..................................theyre called...................................METRIC!
5 Speed.
I am replacing my upper lines when I add my monkey bars (whenever they come in). How did you bleed at the abs? Isn't there just banjo bolts there? I have no problems bleeding a standard system but the abs is new territory for me. Anyone have any idea of a ballpark for the dealer to do the bleed and reset the abs? I need to get the download for the '09 anyway. Just curious.
I have read that the digital tech causes the abs to flush any air trapt in the module.
