Of course they did. You can't have the carburetor/throttle body on the same side of the bike as the kickstand. If you did, all your fuel would pour out. DUH!

Default Ducati used to have the kick start on the left side.

Can't imagine having that.

I would have never bought that one, they have your engine in there wrong too and look at those badges, all backwards.

Does this cause the transmission to run backwards also? Five in reverse, with one forward?

It's a well known fact that most men "dress" to the left, therefore it is your natural instinct to stretch your left leg out first when coming to a stop to take the pressure off. While it's out there you might as well kick the stand...

If the stand wasn't on the left side then the bike would fall over when you parked.

One poster assumed that all European countries drive on the left. Not true. Most European countries, with the exception of England, now drive on the right. As far as that photo of the H-D leaning to the right is concerned, so far as I can tell no one mentioned the fact that the photo was reversed - which is obviously the case.

I think the explanation for right-side kick stands is what one poster suggested - most people are right-handed so swords were typically on the left requiring a left side mount of horses. The left side mount carried over to bicycles and motorcycles dictating a left-side kick stand.
