When to bike shuts down, everything dies. No lights, no starter, no flashers nor turn signals. Completely dead. It takes sometimes 20-30 seconds for the power to kick back on, but it seems like an eternity on the freeway. When I ride that bike I try to stay in lane 1 so I can pull over to restart. Not always possible. Mostly that bike is becoming a garage queen.

Is that bike one of the years/models that had problems with the main circuit breaker? I seem to recall an issue with that in some bikes. I think they had too light of a breaker in them. After popping the breakers it would reset itself in about 30 seconds.

I thought the same thing so I've had the main circuit breaker replaced at least 3 times, maybe more. Still same issue. Sure acts like main circuit breaker though.

My bet is that is is the main breaker popping, but not necessarily a faulty breaker. You may have something that occasionally shorts out causing the breaker to blow. You may need to start checking all the wiring. I'd start at the battery and work my way through it. When you do figure it out, please post here what you found.

I have a 2000 FLTRSEI that is doing the exact same thing. It just started last night, and happened twice today about 5 minutes apart. Please let me know if you figure out what the problem is, it is definately a little scary when it happens, especially when it happens at night b/c you loose all power to include head & tail lights!

I'd check the voltage regulator too.

Writing this for a good friend.
Makes high pitch noise when accelerating in 4th or 5th gear. Stopped by today for a burger and beer and he told me his bike shut off trying to pass a truck on I-75. Preceeded by a loud pitch noise. He says it sound like a high shril noise like a bad chain? After pulling over for a minute or two, bike will start up and he can ride ok but not beyond 4th gear or low speeds.
Any help/comments/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Please call George Vail at
(313) 414-3171. I know he would appreciate any help on this, he is at witts end.
Thanks a lot,
diesel

Just a thought would be to clean and inspect the plug to the ecm and see if there is any corrosion there.

Since everything shuts down, I would concentrate on the area's that can cause that. After all a bad fuel pump relay won't shut down everything. Then I would look for loose or bad connections, since a loose connection can cause heat & metal expands when it gets hot. I have a friend that had a Merkur that wouldn't start if the weather dropped below 40*, it was his inertia switch, pulled it apart & stretched the spring & all was fine. Point is when you look at the connections look for discoloration & look for the simple things, use your logic, you don't need to look at the clutch for a wiring problem. What would cause all of the things you said. Biggest thing is can't fix what isn't broke & if it's running it aint broke, you may have to get it to stall before you will find it. Good luck
