I just did a 4200 mile trip on my '05 ultra, bike now has 10,000 miles on it, I used 1 1/4 quart of oil on this trip. What do you guys think, is that excessive oil consumption?
I had a early 05 eg classic There is a recall on these bikes for bad valve seal guides. Since the valve guides were replaced. I have not used any oil. Bob.
Hell Yes that's excessive but may be due to the type of oil or perhaps past maintence and/or break in.
I change my oil every 2500 miles and even after the initial 1,000 I changed at 2,500 (or 1,500 miles later). I rode it like I stole it from the showroom floor although I did vary the speed for the first 200-300 miles.
At 10,000 I switched to Sny3 and now have 27,000 miles and cranking. I usually cruise above 80, typically between 90 and 100 when possible. I have never added oil between changes and the most I was down was 1/4 quart after my 3700 (missed my 2500) mile California coast ride.
I don't burn any oil in my 2005 Ultra. I would rate my riding style as average and have never been down at oil change time. I change the oil every 2500 miles. To answer your question, I think your consumption rate is high and you need to check it out.
YOU USE SYN3,shame on you!
Just joking, most people here have nothing good to say about it.
Actually most people look at their Harleys than really ride them (I'm guessing based upon the low mileage I've seen posted). I typically average 3,000-5,000+ per month and look forward to moving from Utah to a real State where I can ride more than 5 or 6 months out of the year.
I don't know of other's problems with Sny3. I suspect it's a personal thing and believe any oil, regular or synthetic will work well if you change it frequently and stay on top of all servicing expensive as it becomes.
I do know the synthetic is a b.... to wash off my hands. lol
