I have found that my helmet also plays a roll in the amount of buffeting I get. My HJC 3/4 jars my teeth a hell of a lot more than my GMAX 1/2 helmet does.
Most of the time its perfect but sometimes on the highway my eyeballs feel like they're going to fall out; usually if its windy. I have a Clearview 9.5 with the recurve that helped a lot. I have an '09 Ultra

1+ I usually wear my HJC FS3 which has an option of a sun visor or shield. With the sun visor installed I get a lot more beffetting so If I'm getting a lot I'll remove the visor and either go without it or put on the full shield which usually takes care of it. I have a shorter Clearview windshield with re-curve that helped quite a bit too.
How does the distance from the inner fairing effect buffeting? Does sitting closer increase or decrease buffeting? Thanks!
Sitting closer decreases the buffeting. Usually the strongest turbulences appear in the area where your poor pillion pasenger has her head. Try slowly moving your head from right behind the windshiled to as far back as you cn stretch, and you can easily feel how the wind changes as you move backwards.
haven't experienced buffeting on the RK yet (because I haven't ridden it) but once I put lowers on my VTX in the right position - tucked almost up to the bottom of the shield, 95% of the buffeting vanished. I imagine same deal with the RK lowers that you can add. I plan on getting them as most of my 100 mile per day r/t commute is highway
