So is acrylic so much less expensive than polycarb that it makes it a lot more profitable? What about this so-called "modified acrylic" that is claimed by LRS to be "Every bit as strong as polycarbonite". Is that just total BS?

I gotta say that I really like the LRS windshields as well as their customer service, so I'd really like to see this vendor step up and offer some facts to defend that claim. Actually my prefence would be for them to use the same exact shapes and start making their shields out of polycarb.

I don't know what they're talking about when the refer to "modified acrylic". But I can promise you... polycarbonate is some damn strong, durable stuff.

Do a google search for a plastic supplier and call and ask them yourself.

The data is from our lab tests (we actually have a lab, with real scientists in it). The data was gathered using the testing standards known as the Free Falling Steel Dart Test (for impact resistance) and the IZOD Notch Test (for crack resistance). Various plastics have been subjected to these same tests for many decades, and our findings correlate with everyone else's. So the data is nothing new, yet it's something to keep in mind when deciding between an acrylic shield, a high impact acrylic shield, or a polycarbonate shield.

Hey Herb, I have a Memphis Shades acrylic shield on my wifes Ride, do you have a replacement shield for it?

Polycarbonate is bullet-proof "glass" so it will not break. It does have three issues: 1) it is soft (yeah, I know, but trust me, that's why it doesn't break) so it scratches REALLY easily. It can be hardcoated but it will scrach. 2) it absorbs UV light, so it will yellow with time and 3) it will acquire surface cracks (crazing) just with vibration.

Acrylic on the other hand is brittle and will crack on impact.

If your looking for safety, only polycarbonate is the way to go. It has issues and should be considered a replaceable item every few years.

People have been riding HD's with windshields for some time now, I don't understand the fuss over what one is better made.

Better it hitting the windshield than your face.

LRS did refund me for the windshield. They would have replaced it but I had already ordered a poly shield.
