Which wrap is the best to use? I looked at them and one calls for the pipe to be painted with heat resistant paint before wrapping, another call for the wrap to be soaked in water and then installed. And another one calls for the wrap to be installed and then sprayed with RT silicone spray(comes in different colors). How much would a guy need to wrap the rear pipes on an Ultra. Tired of the heat and looking for a cheap and quick cure(know it won't eliminate all but hoping for some relief).
I have thought about this but was wondering if it
would decrease the space between the pipe and the
heat shield to the point where the shield would get
hotter because of decreased airflow between the two.
OR, if it would work!!!!!!
There is a company that sells wrap that states in the instructions to either soak it, or better yet just spray it with a bottle of water and then wrap tight leaving 1/4" overlap. They have thermal ties as well for the ends. Let me see if I can find it in my drunken stupor!
I used DEI wrap and silicone spray when my pipes were wrapped black. Be aware if that you are wrapping it with black a lot of the color will bleed out from soaking it, but you get a great fit by soaking. It wraps much tighter. It took A long time to dry. The black fades quick, even with the DEI spray, but all you have to do its take the pipes off and re spray.
I used some heat wrap I got off of ebay. I soaked it in water to help make it more plyable and it was easier to install. I let it dry for a few days then I painted it with very high temp engine coating. I put 3 coats on it for good measure. Then after it dryed I put the pipes back on,installed the heat shields and it works great. It has been on for over a year and it has not started to fray or unravell yet. I will say that it lowered the heat on my wifes right foot down to about 200 degrees. I say go for it.
I wrapped mine with DEI and used their silcone paint. I recommend soaking it in water before wrapping. Makes for a tighter better fit. I didnt notice any heat difference. If anything maybe hotter since I dont have any shields.
