I called about a 2000 Screaming Eagle Road Glide last night for 15K. It has 15K miles and in very good condition according to the owner. The owner said it was a recovered stolen bike that he bought from a guy that purchased it from an auction. He said it was never wrecked and he had to call HD for the keys when he bought it which was about 18 months ago. He wants to trade up to an Ultra and is why he is selling it. The title apparently states it was recovered or something. I was thinking of purchasing a 2007 but due to the transmission issues I have not. I thought this bike or one similar might be a better bike in the end but I am not sure if it is. Any comments or help would be appreciated.
The SERG is a great bike and 15k miles on a 2000 is nothing! Heck, I put more than that on every year.
I do not know how the "Recovered" statement on the title effects anything. If the bike is truely clean and in good shape and the title is legit, then it's probably fine. Perhaps someone else can add info in the "recovered" status...???...
You shy away from a 07, cause a very limited few hear a noise? But youre thinking about droping 15 k on a 7 year old Salvage bike. wow,That bike is branded Salvalge, stolen/recoverd, total wreck and others all get the Salvage brand, it will be stamped on the title in BIG BOLD LETTERS, and no matter what it looks like it will always be salvage, some insurance companies won't even write a policy on salvage vehicles, most banks won't loan on them either, if a 2000 SE RG is worth 15k, the same branded salvage is worth much less, I have delt with many salvage bikes, If this was a stolen recovery, how much was gone? Id say could be alot, motor/trans ? more? less? you will never know for sure. The old saying buyer beware is no more true than with salvage vehicles. You buy it for 15k and I can say, the day will come when you will be very sad you did.
There may be issues with this bike as was mentioned and is why I posted the question in the first place. Thank you for the responses.
There is always a risk in purchasing a used vehicle and I am well aware of this. The information I am getting from this board about the 2007 transmissions, engine overheating, bad radios, noisy starters, etc. does not appear to be minimal for a 20K+ bike. I also get the feeling from visiting the dealers that they basically ignore your concerns or state they have never heard of a problem like that. You would think that they would know their product as well or better than you do and would also visit these sites for customer feedback but I am not sure that is the case.
I have had good and bad experiences buying a used vehicle but feel in general the person before you has had the new vehicle problems and have taken care of them and has also taken the hit for the depreciation. The 2000 RG I was referring to may not be a good example as it was a stolen vehicle. There are other screaming eagle RGâs for sale with a higher price tag but at what point is too high vs. buying new?
The key thing to remember about a forum, is some tend to beat a dead horse to death, Here is a reality check; I have read nothing about 07's having radio problems, none of "over heating" yes some saying they feel a lot of motor heat, heck it's 99 degrees here and has been for two months, every year harley gives off motor heat not just a 07, thats the nature of a big twin sitting under your butt, they all get hot. Nosey starter was explained by a tech in numerous posts and is nothing to worry about, and yes, I read about 1 person getting a trans. replaced and a few worried about the 5th gear whine, and many others that are overjoyed with their 07, If you want to see how things really are do a serch on old posts on the 05 or 06 models, you will hear all the things some whine about with those years, its always something. Harley has no more "real" problems than any other brand, I have been on the goldwing forum, guess what? all they talk about is how the 06's overheat! Been on yammaha road star forum too same thing, only its the front drive pullies coming loose. Check em out if you dont believe me, but overall if you read here alot you will find 100 postive posts to every gripe post, ask even those that are complaining if they would trade the HD for something else and they will tell you heck no. I feel you have never owned a harley, you won't understand most of this untill you do.
Let me say this about salvage vehicles.....from experience. If you love the bike, it looks like a good rebuild, and you are happy with the price.....buy it. But be aware.....VERY FEW people will even give a second look at a salvaged vehicle when it comes time for you to sell it. My old motto works pretty good......if the title is branded, it's worth exactly HALF what a similar unbranded vehicle will bring. If average book value is, say, 15,000, if you can buy it for around 7,500......you might not get burned come resale time.

What a great post gunrunner , Well Done , as for the salvage title would say a little above half book value , it might look like a good bike but u will never know the truth what happened everyone selling a salvage vehicle says "minor damage" that b.s. It could be a chore when trying to sell the bike 2 , I would set your budget a look for a bike . As gun said the 07's have been bashed by many , I have a 07 s.g. and had no problems and can't get off the thing most days.
