I purchased a shifter cover for my road king that has the script harley davidson on the cover. Looks very simple to install but I can't get the cover to fit the shifter. The instructions say if this happens, you need to adjust the shifter before you put on the cover.
I don't want to mess around with my shifter since I have no clue how to make this adjustment.
The weak point is the pseudo heim joints on the shifter linkage. If you would have bought the billet link, it has much better heim joints and will save you aggravation in the future.
However to answer your question - Remove the front linkage, the one that attaches to your foot shifter first. Keep the bike in gear, parked. Make your front and rear joint link adjustments for your cover. Re-attach the front link.
Now you may have to adjust the foot shifter, but your cover will be fitting
