You'll get a lot of opinions on this topic. But I plan to follow what is recommended in the owners manual. The frequency does not change if you are doing the servicing or if a dealer is doing it.
5k in a car/truck is fine, but I change my bike oil every 2k with conventional oil, 3k with syn. and thats all I use these days with the hotter running engines and summer heat, syn gives much better protection and helps motor run cooler. Mobile 1 for HD's. is my choice although I have run amsoil I like mobile 1 better cause you can find it at any most autozone. Syn3 by harley is not near as good, you can go to amsoils site to see the tests between oil. Mobile1 and amsoil 20-50 are way above the others.
I change my oil every 2500 - 3500 and I use synthetic oil. I change the primary and tranny every other oil change. I also use the same oil in all three holes. You may get a lot of opinions about this too. As a note: Moble 1 syntheteic 20-50 for V-Twins is the same as Screamin' Eagle but cheaper.
The dealer did my first oil change and used HD oil and about 4000 miles later I changed it the second time and I was a little worried about the oil maybe being broken down like you'll see in your truck or car if you run it too long. When I drained it from the pan it was still heavy and looked like new. It looked and felt as good as the HD oil that I put back in it. I don't have any worries about using the HD oil after seeing that. All the miles were put on in 100 degree weather and I think the oil held up fine. I may change a little sooner but I think maybe too much is being made of this oil issue. I am not an oil expert of course maybe the Mobile 1 is better, I"d have put it in if I could have gotten all the old oil out but I don't want to mix it with the 24 oz. that stays in the engine when you drain it. Boy I'm a rambling talker ain't I. Good luck and have fun , Stafford
How often do you do the primary and trans and with what?
I do 2 oil changes to 1 primary and trans,I run Redline shock proof in trans, 20-50 oil is to thin in it IMO, even though they say you can, Ive read many posts on metal shavings on drain magnet after its use. I use the mobil1 in the primary. Redline will make that 07 trans much better!
I use Amsoil, and it allows up to double the oil change interval. But, I live in Arizona, so I change oil in all three holes between 3500-4000 miles. HD stock enging oil is so crappy, that they have to recommend changing it every 2500 miles. For the tranny and primary, the normal change interval is every 5k miles.
