Default 2011 news!!!

I see that at least some Sporty models will have oil cooled heads and a good sized oil cooler hanging on the left side.

That particular model was released about a month ago. From what I understand, the HD website will be updated tomorrow or Wed.

The XR has been oil cooled since first introduced so it's a layup to apply it to the rest of the Sportster line.

Unfortunately it's the big twin that really needs this, not the Evo.

My guess is you will see oil cooled heads similar to this XR on the big twins. BMW has been doing this for years on their Boxer motor in their adventure bikes. That motor (1200cc) is running something like 12:1 compression and somewhere between 105-135 HP depending on the bike model. Add to that, no notable heat problems and meets tighter Euro emission standards. Ducati has a similar approach. I think this is the future for Harley too. Just a guess but I suspect you won't see it until the 2014 model year when the patents expire on the TC96. Of course if they brought it out earlier, with somewhere around 100-110 hp stock and no heat problems, you would see folks trading and sales would definately pick up. Perhaps that will motivate HD to bring it to market before 2014.

I agree, it's a more logical transition for Harley than water cooled because it isn't as dramatic of a change. Instead of Harley switching to a completely new engine, the oil cooled heads is just an enhansement to improve the performance.

Looks kind of tacky how they just strapped the cooler on the outside of the front down tubes. Love the concept but I think it could have been adapted to the chassis a little better.

You know there is going to be quite a few bugs with those...........I don't think they ever got the rocker boxes to seal yet.

Local dealer left for the show today and said the 2011s should be on the web site by about noon. With time zone changes that may mean more like 2-3pm here in WI.

Old news. The XR1200 has had the oil cooled heads since the 2008 model year. They used them from the Buell parts bin which had them from the 06 model year.

The XR1200 is a Sportster you know.

Sportsters will continue to get the upgraded Buell designed parts in the coming years.

If they used everything the Sportster would pump out 103 crank hp instead of the 90 crank hp of the XR and the 65 Hp of the XL.

We can only dream. And it would weight 100 lbs less.
