You need a passport or passport card going both ways. Last year they wanted to try and take my bike apart...2 hours it took...was with a group of 3 and I was picked.....found out later the inspector was a new kid....**** happens!
Damn, i can see this happening to me. im a pretty shady looking guy
maybe that day will be a long sleve shirt to cover up my tattoo sleeves. plus i will be alone.
I cross the border at Buffalo several times a year. No problems either way on bike or in cage. Give them my passport, answer their questions honestly and away we go. In fact, one time on the bike (there were three bikes), the US customs guy said "I wanna hear your exhaust as you leave!!"
Nothing against canadians but WTF .. you cant even get in if you have been busted with a DUI? But we dont pull that **** on them when they come here?... Why would they ask me if I have a gun at home ? **** them its my gun and its home ... I guess im staying in Michigan ... Oh ya I dont have a dui on my record either but im tired of shelling out money to go places.. Now the price of one of those fancy drivers licenses or a passport just to get into canada ?
Nope no thanks....
I want to be clear that the crossing was quick. Didn't even have to get out of the truck (Pick-up). But I could have done without the lecture about guns. Once I said I didn't have any, that should be it, unless you want to conduct a lawful search, which I half expected.
Once in Quebec, we had a great time. Everyone was polite. The little cutie at the Harley dealer in Sherbrooke didn't speak a lick of english. Visited my wife's two aunts who are retired nuns living in a convent...The nurses were a bunch of cuties who didn't speak a lick of english. Fotunately my wife still speaks a little french.
I'm from London Ont and cross all the time. Marine City and across the river at Sombra are the best options. And yes a passport is required to get back into the USA. Usually less wait with the ferry and a lot of times if there is a line up they will bring the bikes up and fill the ferry where a car cannot fit. Its a bit of a ride then to Windsor. Its closer to Sarnia.
The bridge in Detroit is not bad but can be slow. The Bridge at Port Huron is really slow most of the time and they can grill you.
Yup, it was Port Huron where I crossed during the week, non rush hour. Very crowded, saw lots of open trunks and alot of grilling.
Im visiting some family in the detroit area next week and am thinking i might ride into canada just to say i have. maybe stop by Thunder Road HD and pick up a tee shirt.
My question is do i need to bring my passport and expect huge delays crossing? Anything else? Is it a huge pain these days? if it is im not going to even bother. i used to live Michigan and i remember we used to just need an id and a bull shiz excuse to go drink legally.
Haven't read all of the posts, so this may have been said already but; do NOT, repeat NOT try to bring your concealed handgun across the border. Canada loves rifles and shotguns, but has a serious dislike for handguns.
Just go and have fun....Yes they will ask you questions and most of the time they are STUPID questions..but that's their job..they are trying to trick you up. If you're not doing anything wrong you'll be fine. You'll need the enhanced license or passport. Most of the time I have issues crossing back into the U.S....but they are just doing their job.
Bring your passport so you can get back into the USA. No Customs agent in Canada is going to deny you entry based on your desire to visit a piece of Canada. Who knows you may like it here and want to come back. They will however not be to willing to let you into Canada if you have a firearm or recent criminal record of some kind. If you are curious about Canada feel free to visit and see how we live on the other side of your border.
