Brad Penn oil is not even a Synthetic oil, just a basic dino oil, nothing special. Has the same high heat break down as any non synthetic oil.

 

Quad has some excellant points about oils. I will add my 2 cents. First, the age of the engine is important. My regiment is to start with a new engine and run regular fossil oil. Whether the engine is built to tight blueprint tolerances or not,, I am allowing the fossil oil to make engine parts rub and seat in together. In my opinion, you will not get this kind of "break-in" with syn oil as they are too slick. As Quad said, probably becaise of the molecule differences. At 250miles...1000miles...and 2500miles I do oil changes. I always do 100% oil changes. Realize that 1 quart of dirty oil is left in your engine sump and containminates the total oil once you start the engine up. A dealership oil change only changes the resorvoir...not the oil bag and the engine sump. So at 2500miles or 5000miles I have a choice. I can run syn or continue with the fossil. Either way, I need to follow and not change back and forth. The danger is changing to syn once too many miles have been run on the engine. You can hear the syn oil difference at low miles. It is really bad and dangerous to engine at higher mileage. I say the limit is about 10,000miles. In other words, once you hit 10k, stay with what you got. Regarding this Amsoil thing, I believe you got a contaminated run of oil or something on your trip contaminated your oil. The oil change fixed it. Good thing you stopped and had ot looked at. You saved your scooter. Hope things are good now.

I want to add something. I think syn oil is best overall for it's slickness and breakdown. Amsoil or Mobil1...your choice. But I feel strongly that a dinosour of a V-Twin design that you will have a breakin period and during that period you need to run the fossil oils. After that period, use syn. I have proven the difference between syn and fossil to be 10deg F all other things being the same. I believe you can make an egine run cooler for the rest of it's life by a fossil oil breakin before switching to syn. I also believe in the tooth fairy.

 

Happy with the Redline products, all three holes. Just got back off a 4000 mile trip. Temps on several days around the 100 degree mark and was running close to 80 MPH all day long going out west and coming back. Didn't notice any unusual noises. Have a oil cooler and temp gauge. Temps stayed in the 180 - 200 degree range, unless stopped for several minutes. Have never used any amway so can't comment on it one way or another.

 

Those are water temperatures, not oil for the most part. Perhaps you should backcheck with a laser thermometer and see how far off your gauge is. My Harley oil cooler adapter doesn't pass oil until well over 200, and that's pretty often here in Georgia.

Edit: CORRECTION: I just got a new laser thermometer (bigger, better) and found that the old one was deficient for some reason. I did the 3 finger/3 second check on my oil bag and found out several things. That measured the oil in the bag, but inaccurately - it showed to be about 125 degrees. BUT...the oil in the filter was running at 185. I'll assume this is the normal backstreet running temp with Amsoil, so Mike was probably correct. I still know that if I can't hold 3 seconds on the tank, she's getting warm - and soon the idle pressures will drop off, even to 0.

 

Brad Penn 20W-50 High Performance is a "partial" synthetic oil. That's what their website and the label says.

8931 miles on engine
1309 miles on oil sample
Very hot engine, started pinging (could be the gas)
Upon next cold start, lifters clanging 30-40 seconds

 

My Brother in law had a similar viscosity issue while using Amsoil in his 08 Ultra. after a full day of riding in mid the 80's the oil thinned, but was not noticed until the next morning when a puddle formed beneath the primary. I love this oil and run it in my 00 Excursion 7.3 diesel, but I think I'll switch to Redline for my 05 Ultra. Thanks for all the info.

 

I do not use Ams-oil and do not care to but the OP problems were not oil related. I have been in the repair business 35 years and i believe his issues were caused by a sticking lifter probably plugged by a small piece of gasket material. no need to cry the sky is falling and go change your oil brand, I am very comfortable using the brand I do and I will leave it at that.

 

send my oil and filter today to amsoil have you tried to mail something lately i like to have never got the lady at the us post office to take the 16 oz of used motoroil. she looked on 3 driffence list, called over a coworker, who called someone on the phone. she said they would mail it only if i agreed to mail it gound only good thing i didnt tell her about the filter

 

They'd have probably called the bomb squad on you!
