I have an '09 Ultra that I bought new. It had the original, cupping front tire issue. I was aware of the issue and the service bulletin because of this forum. I honestly meant to get the tire swapped out, but every day that I had a chance, I ended up riding instead.
Fast forward to yesterday and just over 19000 miles. I stopped by my local dealership (Indy North, Indianapolis) and spoke with the service writer and a few other people there. A tech measured my remaining tread and confirmed not only the awful cupping, but also that my remaining tread depth was still more than enough to still get the free upgrade.
An hour later and I'm riding home on a brand new front tire courtesy of HD and presumably, Dunlop. Now THAT is customer service.
I know, I know, I should have swapped out sooner and potentially could've missed out on the free upgrade because of my own procrastination. That said, I don't pay much attention to mileage and only went in to see about the tire because it was howling so bad. I fully expected the dealership to laugh at me when I told them the original front tire had 19000 miles on it, but they didn't. They measured it, said I fit the criteria and got it fixed. I'll be getting a new rear this weekend, just for the hell of it, but the rear has lots of tread left too.
So, kudos to my dealership for customer service and additional kudos to HD and Dunlop for developing motorcycle tires than can even approach 19000 miles!!!
I'm not an HD Koolaid drinker by any means, but the positives sometimes need mentioning too.
Ditto, I took mine in for the 10k service last week. I knew the tires were getting worn and told them I wanted new ones. They checked them both and told me the front tire would be free. Considering the prices of these chunks of rubber, it really made me smile.
Let me add a good review for Bergen County HD. They helped me out in a similar situation. BTW the replacement tire has none of the problems of the original and I've put about 6,000 miles on it. Thanks Bergen.
The original tire was mounted backwards, that is the cause of the wear issues. Dunlop put the direction arrow on the tire backwards and they were mounted by HD accroding to the arrows on the tires.
I just got my original front tire replaced with the D408F under the program, at 17830 miles. I still have 3/32 on the rear, but it will be getting replaced soon anyway. Pity this couldn't have happened in a couple weeks, I am getting new tires and wheels anyway. People are complaining about these tires, but I'm getting great wear with them and so are many others.
Oh yeah, my dealer is C&A HD in Plain City OH. Great bunch of folks there...

to an extent...it was actually harley that requested the arrow being pointed the way it was against dunlops recommendation..but I agree with the overall point of the thread..even though i'm sure it was a bunch of finger pointed as to who's call it was
I just had a similar good experience with my local dealer. Took my Ultra in on Tues. for the tank recall and mentioned I was getting some faint . Told them I had heard that some of the 09 front tires were having problems and could they please check it out. (I didn't tell them that it was cupping and thanks to this forum I knew all about the problem and wanted a new tire.) I also showed them the copy of the service bulletin (M-1243) about the jiffy stand lean angle and asked if that was something they could also take care of.
I got the call yesterday that the bike was all set with a new front tire and the updated jiffy stand bracket and the tank recall done. Service manager said it would've been done sooner but The MoCo was slow in responding with approval on the tire. Looking forward to picking it up this AM and a beautiful day of riding.
My dealer did right by me too.
On a side note, the service manager mentioned that my tire claim was easier to approve by the MoCo because I used the terms "howling and vibration" from the front end and not cupping and scalloping. The MoCo considers cupping and scalloping an inflation problem and not a tire problem.
