I've heard of people's stock cables snapping, and yes the lid snaps off and goes to the ground. I never open mine and fling it open, I always make sure the lid is secure before letting go of it.

Just installed on my bike, works great so far. No more messing with stupid stock teather. Funny thing is still reach for it to side it in out of the way. Old habit you know.
For those of you that have a problem with the stock tether wanting to escape every time you close the lid here is a little tip. Unscrew the tether at the lid, flip the head around and reattach. Now it will want to flop in instead of out.
