So, I am in the process of ditching my Kuryakyn Hypercharger after reading some negatives about them here on HDF (man I would have liked to have used HDF before I made some purchases) and I am looking at a few options. I'm looking at the stage I kits from HD, Arlen Ness, and Fuel Moto. My "basic" question is this. If I go back to the stock "football" air cleaner cover, how does the air flow differ than if I were to leave the filter element open without a cover? Seems like the stock HD cover doesn't provide much area for intake versus no cover. Also, I'm curious if anyone has any experience with the Arlen Ness stainless steel filter elements? If I am going to expose the filter element, I really like the stainless steel versus a red colored filter element. Comparing the stock ac cover to the Kury hypercharger, the hypercharger has more openings in the cover to let the air in, but if the filter element is completely open, wouldn't that be even better?
For what it's worth, I have had no problems with the hypercharger. I've read reviews about oil being sucked through the intake and all kinds of things. I think it has worked fine. I'm swapping it out as more of an experiment to see if I gain anything.
The Hyper Charger is a perfectly good A/C upgrade commensurate with HD, Super Suckers, Etc. Unless you have major upgrades (cams, hi-flo heads, etc) the Hypercharger is a great A/C and looks cool to boot!
Oh yeah...the "football" cover has zero effect on the performance of the A/C...it's just cosmetic. It allows plenty of freeflowing O2.
I see you're from La Crosse...I have "good" memories when I used to visit Grand Dads Bluff! ;-)
I think the hypercharger looks cool. I can't speak from any hands on experience, but I haven't heard anything that would scare me off them. I really don't think there's much difference in performance between all the stage I air claeners.
Thanks for the replies. I did contact a very reputable site sponsor here on HDF and he said that they haven't had much luck with the hypercharger.
Another question I had is in regards to the filters themselves. Does one perform better than another? Do K&N, Arlen Ness, and HD filters have similar air flow specs?

Yes, I am from La Crosse. Nice area to live and the roads around here are great for riding.
