Don't get to wrapped up with your tank size....what's the old saying "Its not the size of your tank..its how you use it". I ride with others who can't ride as far as me and its no big deal. We stop each hour to stretch anyway. If your buddies are giving you crap...then maybe its time for new buddies?
I've got to agree with some others and say you should be getting much better gas mileage than you are. I would expect to get at least 38 mpg unless you're doing something extreme when riding. I've got a 6 gallon tank and I still stop for gas before it's empty. It sounds like you and your buddies like to pile on the miles between stops, but I'll bet they're getting waaay better mileage than you too.
I remember with my 06 fat boy I was 150 to 160 miles out of a 4 gallons of gas, which averages about 37 mpg, give or take. 08 Street averages 180 out of 5 gallons 36 mpg. 2010 Ultra as long as the bike is not running hot is about 180 miles.

Just did a 4,700+ mile ride. (Yes, it was fun!) Kept careful mileage notes, trying to see how mileage changed. It was around 35 mpg when I rode 80+ mph on the slab all day, and mpg went up a bit as speed went down.
I averaged 38 mpg over the 4,700 miles.
I suspect you can do better than 25 mpg if you tweak things a bit.
Went for a ride up along the Mississippi (WiHwy 35) Wednesday. Two up (450 lbs)...284 miles. Got a little better than 41mpg. All back roads...No Inerstate. Rode for almost 6 1/2 hours, several stops and a lot of lookin'!!
