I have a 2010 Road Glide. I am adding a speaker level amp that has a start up wire. I want to attach this to the Harley Radio switched power wire so that when the radio powers up so does the amp. The amps main power will be run directly to the battery. Who knows which wire is the power wire? Thank you.
Thanks the lighter is my second choice however I would prefer the amp not turn on when I am not using the radio. I know there is a switched power wire some in the radio wire harness.
Yeah on most after market radios they are blue and the amp I am installing has a blue wire that turns it on. However factory wiring rarley uses standard colors.

The only way to do what you want is to access the on/off switch of the radio which is inside the radio itself--at least that's what I see from the wiring diagrams.
Power to the radio is supplied by pin outs 10, 12, and 20. But those act like the wiring in a wall switch in your house--they supply electricity to the switch, but if you tap them you will be energizing whatever circuit you've added which won't be controlled by the radio's on/off switch.
Are you an EE? I ask because the major amp vendors (Hawg-wired, Hogtunes, Arc, and even HD) don't wire the on/off switch of the amp to the on/off switch of the radio suggesting there is no necessity to wire the amp that way.
Harleypingman thanks. I am just a rider who is upgrading his bike. Looks like I can not wire the amp to the radio on. I guess that is why it was so hard for me to find the answer. Will wire the amp on to the lighter hot wire. I am installing a JVC 65 watt RMS at 4 ohms 2 chanel amp with speaker level inputs into POLK 4 ohm 5 1/4" mid-woofer and a 1" soft dome tweeter through a cross over. They are rated to 100 watts RMW 300 Max. They are very efficient with a93 rating. The tweeters were placed into the upper gauge positions. I removed the air temp gage and electrical gage and move dthe fule gage down to th elower level. Easy hook up as you just run the HL speaker wires to the amp. Thus the Harley controle all still work yet you get much cleaner more powerull sound. The amp is 2 ohm stable and should not run hot powering these speakers through a cross over.
if u have a mini amp your power sorse will be the wire that is on your head light plug it has a red cap on it. and of course your main power sorse would be to the battery. thats how i installed my arc mini amp and it worked well. that way your amp will go on when u turn your switch on or on accesories hope this helps.
