This question has been on my mind for a while now. I recently traveled to Durango this past weekend and in my initial climb up the mountain, I started losing a bit of power and had to downshift. The engine was pinging a bit. I had my engine dyno'd before I left, and the numbers were excellent for a stock TC88.
After a day or two riding up there in the 10,000 foot plus elevation, I noticed that I was getting more power when climbing the mountains. Then, on the way home, I no longer had to downshift to 4th gear like before. The incline and altitude were pretty similar. My only conclusion was that the ECM made adjustment (but slowly) after a few days of riding in the thinner air.
No expert, but my understanding is that the ECM adjusts realtime based on input from it's various sensors. THis is certainly not like a closed loop system that monitors ARF, but it does have input from at least Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor, Crank Position Sensor, and Cylinder Heads Temp Sender. Of cousre it also knows throttle postion and RPM....
It does seem odd that your experience was that it seemed to improve a couple days later. Possibly a different taken of gas????
