Default RoadKing Windshield / Wind Deflector Looks or Function?

Well, now that I am a proud owner of a RoadKing I am looking at all the goodies and BOY are there a lot of them for this bike! I LOVE the looks of the King with no windshield but I also love the functionality a windshield gives. I was wondering if anyone runs one of these on there RK: http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/g...bmLocale=en_US

This thing looks good but does it do anything as far as wind protection or is it strictly for looks? It states it's only 11" so I'm thinking it may do nothing but then again sometime something is better than nothing. I'm only 5'9" so I'm looking for something that might be a good medium for the stock and no windshield if there is any?

Thanks!

T

Seems to me there is a great deal of turbulence behind the RK windshield. I have considered lowers for this reason. When your on the slab at speed take your left arm and cross your chest tight, start lowering your arm and you can feel the turbulence come and go from the bottom of the bike.
At least for this winter I think I will be putting soft lowers on. There are many styles to choose from, and you wont have to worry so much about heat issues.

I have this windshield and I'm 5' 9" as well and I love it. It will allow you to relax at your hands from squeezing water out of the grips, but will not do much for being wind blasted from the neck up. I wear a full face helmet and my head will bobble some over 75 mph, but to me thats no big deal. It will keep the wind off your chest completely and allow you to relax a bit on the bike while on the freeway. I find the stock windshield to be bothersome and wont even use it. Going to be going from SF, Ca. to San Diego soon and would take the deflector over the stocker if that helps.

P.S. I'm guessing with a beenie helmet it might be as good as you need the areo-dynamics of the full helmet with this shield.

Yea, I would plan to wear my fullface while running this windshield. Good to know it take the wind off the chest. That's kinda what I was going for.

Thanks!

Been there, done that...got rid of it after one summer. But I'm 6'3" and it directed every bug I hit right into my face. Sure looks good though...

I'm guessing the wind buffetting with the 11" screen might be worse than no screen at all. Have you thought of trimming the stock shield a couple of inches?

Thought of that but then decided due to ease of switching them on the King it might be nice to have two to choose from depending on my mood. :-)

It all depends how tall you are.

I have the 11" for my RKC. (see sig pic below)

You can definitely tell the difference with and without it on the highway - it takes much of the wind off your chest.

Like the others said, however, it stops there - I wore a full face most of the time while touring because your head is really getting buffeted much above 80 mph. Also, as others said, small rocks, insects, etc. - they always seemed to hit directly on my FF visor.

Finally went with a 19" Memphis Shades windshield this summer, and for long-distance touring I like it much better.

But just for cruising around close to home or commuting to work, the 11" windscreen is all you really need IMO.
