Default Related Story on Exhaust Flanges

On my 1990 FLST the exhaust flanges were so tight they were bent. I had to use a heavy hammer to flatten them out on an anvil. Luckily the studs were fine.

I used the replacement gaskets that were supplied. I torqued the bolts to the recommended I think it was 18 ft/lbs. They dont leak at all but the flange still is about a 1/8" or little more away from the motor. I am scared to tighten em any tighter it feels like i would just break the bolt off. I think I am going to ride them for a while and then re-tighten a little as long as they dont start leaking.

Thanks for all the tips help and compliments guys!

if you tightened them that tight, then you've definitely over tightened them. from the manual:

Using a long 1/2 inch swivel socket, tighten the top nut of the front cylinder head exhaust flange to 9-18 IN LBS. Tighten the bottom nut to 100-120 IN LBS. Final tighten the top nut to 100-120 IN LBS.
