Yesterday I removed my fairing for the first time ('08 SG) and while I was in there I noticed that both of the thin silver brackets that connect to the speaker were broken. Today I read many other threads that mention this problem, so I guess it's pretty common. I've never actually noticed any fairing vibration or anything like that, so I'm wondering if this is something that I need to address urgently or can it wait until the next time I remove the fairing?
Do not wait. You are adding stress to the two larger, vertical brackets. They break under normal condition. no need to accelerate the problem.
I have been through both horizontal and vertical more than once on my SG. It's a very common problem that bat wings are prone to.
Just checked with the dealer. Because I bought the bike in August '07, he can't cover it under warranty. Also, when I opened the fairing up this morning to replace the speaker brackets I looked at the vertical brackets and found that they are cracked also. So now I'm going to have to replace them too. So I'm sort of back t0 my original question - Since I'm not noticing any fairing vibration, is this something that has to be done urgently or can I wait until riding season is done?? Thanks for the help everyone.

yes. and aslo should be warrenty fix.
My '06 broke all 4. replace speaker brackets with new designed ones and fixed the 2 uppers myself.
Replace them with the new type and also consider fortifying the verticals at the top while you're in there. Here's a write-up on this procedure. Just fortify the bracket like I did the left side in the write-up and they should last indefinitely. Otherwise I think you'll find these will break too in time. The vertical brackets have also been upgraded, I think.
