My $00.02. If it were the compensator it should show some signs of misbehaving other than at low load conditions as many have stated here unless the spring is way too weak. Even then my bike makes no noise until warmed up and that should discount the compensator. For those of you with the Touring Model H-D service manual go to the picture of the trannie internals and look at the shift forks and shift dogs. What is not fully shown are the tabs on the shift forks that are in contact with the shifter drum. These tabs fit inside a channel in the drum and as the geltleman from england stated on this thread his dealer there (in England-where his trannie was replaced for noise-I quess they rate preferential treatment beacuse they do not live in HARLEY LAND and poor service support might effect sales) said in sixth the shift dogs float (possibly explaing the clatter--tabs on forks moving back and forth in the channel in the drum). With that in mind in the same service manual check the tolerances for the different gears and parts in the complete gearset and it could be easy to see why not everybodys bike makes this sound. For the life of me I cannot understand why the specs on these trannie parts are so loose when the same company has a shimset available to keep the primary and secondary cam chain sprocket within 0.01 or less. It seems the engineers used to develop the different parts of this bike never had a chance to sit down and talk to each other and maybe offer each other a little friendly competition.

Wow, interesting info on the '07's. I've got a '07 Ultra on order to be delivered late January, but I think I'm going to hold off after reading about the transmission issues. My three year old Suzuki has been totally trouble free and I can ride it another six to twelve months until they get these issues worked out.

I have been reading all of the posts here and am now glad I didn't order an '07. My '05 Ultra was making the same kind of noises. It was quiet and smooth as silk when cold, but when she warmed up, the rattling started. The dealer told me all was fine when I knew damn well it wasn't.

I finally decided it was time to move on and find another ride so I checked out the Boss Hoss line. Talk about service: I flew down to Portland and the dealer picked me up, bought me breakfast and then drove me to his shop where we signed the papers.

I rode out of there on a new fuel injected small block Boss Hoss and have not looked back since. I didn't need to worry about upgrading for more power, I had plenty to start with.

Granted, most machines have problems, but it is how the dealers and factory respond (stand behind their product) that is the key.

So far I have been treated like I matter to them. An example: I was in Sturgis this year and needed the 1000 mile service on the tranny. I emailed the factory and the next morning, I got a phone call from New York telling me that they had located a dealer in Spearfish who could fix me up. I took it in, the guy there told me to go have some lunch and come back in an hour or so. Long story short, I was taken care of. On a side note, I ran into Billy Lane while I was there so it was pretty much an all around good day.

Good luck to all of you and I hope HD stands behind their product.

Riding a Boss Hoss and loving it,

Mike

You are just another reason HD better get these things worked out. Others are starting to wander to the competition as well and there's a lot of competition for HD these days. HD loyalty will only run so deep and word of mouth is the best or worst advertisement. Someone said in a previous post bad news travels fast.

Once again I got the "new" ECM download that is suppose to fix the pinging but it did not work well for me. For others it worked great. I have a PCIII coming for Christmas but if that does not fix it I don't know what I'm going to do. Extend the warranty and ride the bike till it explodes? I have my fingers crosssed the PCIII will cure this and I can move on.
