Correct me if I'm wrong,,, but the "clunk" people are referring to is because of the primary oil, clutch dragging from fluid viscosity, that has nothing to do with tranny oil. I went to 20/50 in the bagger primary and atf in the softail primary and the only time they "clunk" IF they clunk is when their cold. Just sayin'.

I am going to use what ever is in my lawnmower, I never changed it and it runs great, haha

Yup, always runs at full throttle and never gets warmed up.

Thicker aint always better... Heavy viscosity equals greater drag on drive train components... A thicker layer on your clutch will equal slippage, and can in some cases cause hard shifts and cluncking when engaging the tranny... These are not close tolerance high performance components we are talking about here... The bottom line is that the technology that we are dealing with is as old as many of us, and the "high tech" lubricants are not aimed at these bikes... It only makes sense that the oil/gear lube you run is compatible with your needs... The bottom line is you need to go with what makes you comfortable and gives you peace of mind...

I agree with you and Chevele, but it seems like a quandry to me: I don't think the ATF is the best chain/sprocket protection, but would be better at clutch release and okay for the clutches. Haven't seen any reliable testimony to ATF use/wear over long miles in the primary. But I do know that those clutch baskets, chains and sprockets cost a pretty penny! You have to consider the clutch plate fingers wearing into the basket as well.

I went from what came with the bike to Amsoil 20w50 to Amsoil severe gear to Walmart Full SYn 85w140 and i can't tell a damn bit of difference...next i will try Shockproof or Belray gearsaver....

Now there's a thought: what characteristic is it that causes less/more "drag" in the oils? I would think a high shear factor with less drag would be what we'd want most in the primary, so we'd have protection but less clutch drag. I've wanted to tighten up my clutch adjustment at times.
Anyone know what it is?

Default amsoil

I just changed the Amsoil that I have only 1500 miles on and I have been using Amsoil for awhile. But It seemed like the last oil change the bike just seemed noisy and did not shift as smooth. This change I used Redline and Redline with shockproof and I took it for a little ride it is smoother and shifts better. Maybe Amsoil had a bad batch?
