I have the Hog Tunes speakers in my lowers, not amped, just driven off the Kenwood head unit (HT speakers in the fairing w/ hog pod driven by HT amp). Sounds great sitting in the driveway or grarge while cleaning the bike but practically useless on the road (lower speakers that is). Your thinking right... "w/amp"... the only way to go!
I'd hold off on the quick disconnect hardware. I've ridden Ultras for the last 12 years and still haven't found a reason to take off the lowers. You can always add the hardware later if you decide you want to. Just my.02.
